COOP, one of the largest supermarket chains in the Nordic region, outsources all IT operations. They wanted a utility-based charging model, but COOP’s service provider charged based simply on the aggregate cost of a managed a pool of resources dedicated to COOP. In addition, lacking visibility into how resources were utilized and what business decisions could be made to affect their cost of IT, COOP were faced with accepting the decisions made by the service provider regarding capacity expansion as business needs and usage patterns changed. Folksam, one of the largest insurance companies in the Baltic region, had a relatively small mainframe operation and believed they could benefit from outsourcing the operation.
